PAUL PHILLIPS holds an appointment as Senior Lecturer in Music at Brown University, where he has taught private lessons in conducting and composition as well as courses in music theory, composition, score reading and conducting, musicology, and interdisciplinary courses involving music’s relationship with science, mathematics, history and literature. As Director of Orchestras and Chamber Music, he administers all performance activity in these areas, and as Director of the String Instrument Division of the Applied Music Program, oversees individual instruction of violin, viola, violoncello, contrabass, harp and classical guitar. He also serves as a Faculty Advising Fellow. His students been awarded Rhodes, Truman, Marshall, Fulbright and other prestigious scholarships and fellowships. They have gone on to graduate study at Curtis, Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, Eastman, Indiana University, the Royal Northern College of Music in England, and other leading schools of music, and pursued successful careers as performers, composers and teachers. Former students who have succeeded on Broadway include Charlie Alterman, musical director of Next to Normal, and John Lloyd Young, who won the 2006 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys.
